'Red Tails' Cast Learned From Real Tuskegee Airmen

There was a lot of pressure on the cast of the upcoming true-life World War II drama, "Red Tails." Not only did they have to honor the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American air regimen in the U.S., but they also had to appease the actual airmen who worked as consultants on the film.
MTV News sat down with Tristan Wilds, Elijah Kelley and Ne-Yo to discuss the relationship between the actors and the real-life historical figures.
Wilds explained that having some of the real Tuskegee Airmen on the set of "Red Tails" made things both easier and harder. With the added pressure came a real sense of insurance.
"It's hard. It definitely is pressure because you're holding the historical importance of these guys basically in your hands while you're creating this film," Wilds said. "But I think having them on set and being there with us and helping us with everything, it kind of made everything so much easier."
Kelley summarized the airmen's dual role on the film, saying, "they were there to validate and chastise our decisions at the same time."
Ne-Yo learned the hard way that when you want to portray real-life figures, you're responsible to them for even the smallest of details. "A few of the existing Tuskegee Airmen were on set making sure that everything was as genuine and authentic as possible to the point where they would grab you and shake you and straighten your tie and pull your pants up and pull your belt," Ne-Yo said. "They would go that far, and you basically just had to take it."
All the men agreed that when it came to taking orders from the real deal, you had little choice but to accept their tips. "An 80-plus-year-old man grabs you and fixes your belt, you might just want to let him do it," Ne-Yo said.

Reports were confirmed Friday (December 16) that the singer is <a href="/news/articles/1676120/britney-spears-is-engaged.jhtml">engaged to Jason Trawick</a>, her boyfriend of two years and "Criminal" video co-star. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:720382" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Fans of the pop princess sent their love and congratulatory wishes online shortly after the story surfaced. Everyone loves a comeback, and Britney Spears' fans are no exception. After a rough period in 2007 that included losing custody of her children and an infamous public head-shaving, Spears has spent the past three years getting her life together, and fans have taken notice. <a href="/news/articles/1676167/britney-spears-jason-trawick-engaged-timeline.jhtml"><b>Take a walk down memory lane with this timeline of Britney and Jason's relationship!</b></a> Facebook user Rosanna Principessa Fabbro wrote, "So happy for her. 'Caged' Brings 'Roller Coaster Of Emotions'
'All sorts of things go wrong, all sorts of things go right,' castmember Matt 'Danger' says of episode two of MTV series.

The series premiere of MTV's new docu-reality show "Caged" brought plenty of hard knocks and drama on Monday night. The show centers on the lives of MMA fighters both in the cage and out, and from what we saw, both bring heavy blows.
From the rocky relationship between castmembers Wes and Red to fellow fighter Daniel's tragic loss of his girlfriend Hannah, this season is sure to bring plenty of drama. Even the training leading up to a big fight had its heart-pounding moments, like Wes' decision to don a sauna suit in a hot car in order to sweat away water weight.
While the premiere focused more on the personal lives of Daniel and Wes, episode two brings more attention to the series' other standout castmember Matt, a.k.a. "Danger."
"In the next episode, you'll see a little more of my story and [the show] will start picking up more with me," Danger told MTV News.
In last Monday's episode we saw a bit of that story begin to develop. Danger confronted his sister about her decision to be a stripper, but the season teaser shown at the end of the episode alluded to an even bigger family problem: his mother's struggles with alcohol.
"At the time, my mother was going through a really difficult time, so I move in with her, I quit my job and start training full time. And it's a roller coaster of emotions and all sorts of things go wrong, all sorts of things go right, and a lot of things fell into my favor and a lot of things didn't," Danger said. "But y'all stay tuned and hopefully enjoy my story and become a fan of mine. I'm a hardworking fighter and I think you'll be able to tell."
While we've seen the downs, the series isn't without its ups. Danger was careful not to reveal too much, but he clued us in to what some of those ups will include over the course of this season.
"In coming episodes, you'll be able to see good friends of mine — a buddy of mine, Tony Kelly, he's coming up. He's a good training partner and one of my best training partners. I've been training with that dude now for two, three years — so very excited to see him get his opportunity to shine."

Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' 'Sounds Very Familiar' To Madonna

There was a hot debate raging about 12 months ago when Lady Gaga dropped her song "Born This Way," with people questioning whether the song sounds too much like Madonna's 1980s hit "Express Yourself."
As the discussion went viral, fans, critics and even Lady Gaga herself weighed in on it. Now, as Madge preps the release of her next album, M.D.N.A., and her film "W.E.," she's finally weighing in on the controversy. Madonna, known for her curt, pithy responses when asked about anyone who might take a cue or two from her playbook, sat down with ABC News recently and had some choice words for pop's latest princess.
"I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well-done," she explained of her onetime "Saturday Night Live" co-star. "When I heard ['Born This Way'] on the radio ... I said, 'that sounds very familiar' ... It felt reductive."
When asked if "reductive" was good or bad, Madonna replied, "Look it up."
The Queen of Pop did call Gaga "a very talented artist" and explained that she thinks that she's making a "statement about taking something that was in the Zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it."
Madonna also addressed her apparent penchant for kissing female pop stars. She recently made headlines when her "Gimme All Your Luvin" cohort Nicki Minaj tweeted that Madge had kissed her on the set of her video.
In true Madonna fashion, she brushed it off, saying, "It was her birthday. I gave her a birthday kiss. No tongue!"
Of course, Nicki is not the first pop star Madonna has locked lips with. Back in 2003, Madge shared kisses on the VMA stage with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. "Nice moment, good kisser. Cool," she remarked of Spears. When asked if she would kiss Spears again, she replied, "No, I already did it. I don't like to repeat myself."

Katy Perry Makes First Public Appearance Since Split

While Katy Perry was missing in action at Wednesdays People's Choice Awards, where she won five prizes, the pop star was spotted on the set of an Adidas commercial in California this week.
A photograph of Perry, who happened to be wearing the new Adidas Originals X Jeremy Scott collection, posing with fan Eric Berlanger first appeared on the It's Just Roxie Tumblr page before going viral. It marks the first time that the pop singer has been photographed after her husband Russell Brand filed for divorce New Year's weekend. The last time she was photographed was in the days leading up to the announcement, when she was in Hawaii on vacation without Brand.
"It was great to see her. I met her a couple times before," Berlanger told UsMagazine.com of hanging with Perry on the Santa Barbara shoot (the singer hails from the SoCal town). "I am a big fan! She was great, really nice. She seemed happy."
As Perry settles back into public life after her split from Brand, she has also resumed her usual cat tweeting ways. On Thursday (January 12), she only wrote "meow," before posting a photo of her cat Kitty Purry.
As the Grammy Awards approach, it seems like fans will see more of the colorful singer. Perry is up for two awards at the February 12 show, and she is scheduled for two concerts later this month, one in Jakarta, Indonesia, and another in the Philippines.
"I am so grateful for all the love and support I've had from people around the world," she wrote a week after Brand filed for divorce in her first comments about the split. "You guys have made my heart happy again."

Golden Globes 2012 Predictions: Best Actor

We only have a couple of days until the madness of Sunday's Golden Globes is upon us and we (hopefully) get unpredictable acceptance speeches, winners and wardrobe choices. Until that big day, we can only make predictions as to who will take home the coveted trophies.
Here are our thoughts on the categories of Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical.
Best Actor - Drama
This category pits a pair of attractive, buzz-worthy superstars-in-the-making against three classically handsome and universally beloved leading men. Because these awards are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press, which is a small group of seasoned international journalists, they tend to award old favorites versus new blood.
Who Will Win: Brad Pitt for "Moneyball," not only because he is a critical and collective favorite, but because he hasn't attended the show or been nominated since 2009 for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."
Who Should Win: Pitt or George Clooney for "The Descendants." Ryan Gosling ("The Ides of March") and Michael Fassbender ("Shame") definitely deserve to win at some point, and they will — just not this year. Leonardo DiCaprio is also in the mix for "J. Edgar."
Best Actor - Comedy or Musical
One thing we appreciate most about the Globes is the recognition of films in the Comedy or Musical genre; too often these types of films get overlooked by other awards shows when they deserve as much attention as the dramatic pieces. And while the nominated performances in the category this year cannot be categorized as full-on comedies or musicals, they are decidedly lighter films, with dramatic elements woven in. An eclectic bunch, to say the least.
Who Will Win: Jean Dujardin for "The Artist." Remember this is the Hollywood Foreign Press we're talking about, and "The Artist" is a wonderfully well-received foreign film. In black-and-white. With no dialogue. It is artsy cinematic goodness, the HFPA's favorite. Dujardin is a slam-dunk.
Who Should Win: Dujardin, followed very, very closely by Joseph Gordon-Levitt for his wonderful warm and moving portrayal of a young cancer survivor in "50/50." Similar to what was mentioned about Gosling and Fassbender in the Drama categories, Gordon-Levitt definitely has a Globe win in his future.

The pop singer created a special message T-shirt, featuring a purple zebra, that <a href="/news/articles/1653432/kehas-we-r-who-we-r-video-is-hot-and-dangerous.jhtml">proclaims "We R Who We R,"</a> the title of her hit anthem about individuality. The shirts sell for $35, with all proceeds supporting the HRC's work to achieve equality for the LGBT community. According to the <a href="http://www.hrc.org/press-releases/entry/human-rights-campaign-unveils-t-shirt-collaboration-with-kesha" target="_blank">HRC website</a>, only 1,000 shirts will be produced. Others are also using the day to bring awareness to LGBT issues. Several notable celebrities will be honored by the Equality Forum, which is hosting an event and profiling notable LGBT members in pop culture. As <a href="http://miamiherald.typepad.com/gaysouthflorida/2011/10/lgbt-history-month-honors-ricky-martin-wanda-sykes-ryan-murphy-pedro-zamora-27-other-icons.html#ixzz1aTgr8yl4" target="_blank">LGBT History Month</a> rolls on throughout October, Ricky Martin, Wanda Sykes, "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy and Pedro Zamora, a former "The Real World" castmember turned AIDS activist, all will be profiled by the organization. "We're the only minority worldwide that's not taught history at home, in school or religious institutions," said Malcolm Lazin, Equality Forum's founder and executive director. "Like every group that's been marginalized, it really helps to make the case why we should take real pride in ourselves and our community." Since launching the program five years ago, over 200 icons have been profiled, including Jane Lynch, Lady Gaga and Neil Patrick Harris. Lazin called LGBT month "empowering and life affirming." The message comes amid increased awareness about young people being bullied, including MTV's <a href="http://www.athinline.org">A Thin Line</a> campaign. The MTV film <a href="http://www.mtv.com/shows/disconnected/series.jhtml">"DISconnected,"</a> which premiered Monday night, focuses on issues in a world where technology controls personal lives. "I see the viciousness of people every day," said <a href="/news/articles/1672289/jersey-shore-vinny-disconnected-fight-negativity.jhtml">"Jersey Shore" star Vinny Guadagnino</a> on the "DISconnected" after show. "I kind of want to be a soldier in the field, so to speak, and try to combat the negativity with a positive message. <P>On November 1, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> will take his fans <a href="/news/articles/1672827/justin-bieber-under-the-mistletoe.jhtml"><i>Under the Mistletoe</i></a> on his holiday album. But he's giving them an early treat by releasing his <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> duet, "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," on Monday (October 24). </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="id:1672718" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The song dropped on Ryan Seacrest's <a href="http://ryanseacrest.com/2011/10/24/usher-premieres-duet-with-justin-bieber-chestnuts-over-an-open-fire-audio/" target="_blank">radio show</a>. Its vibe is reminiscent of '90s R&B tracks, and it sounds a lot like it could have been recorded by Boyz II Men, who also appear on the album. The Christmas classic is all about the little joys of the holiday season, including the family get-togethers, the food and Santa bringing presents to children. The song, one of the classics that appears on the album, hits iTunes on Monday. Bieber and Usher previously appeared together on "Somebody to Love" off <i>My World 2.0.</i> "Justin and I did the classic record 'Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.' This record is going to be remembered for years to come," Usher told Seacrest on Monday morning. "It's a record that has always been one of my favorites, and I'm happy that I was able to share it with Justin, and for us to put it out. The album is full of surprises. Justin's <i>Under the Mistletoe</i> is going to be incredible!" In the lead-up to the release, Bieber <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/justinbieber/status/128163827832467456" target="_blank">released</a> some behind-the-scenes footage of his mentor and him in the studio working on the song. He also shared that he had another surprise in store for his fans. Just one week after dropping the video for "Mistletoe," he <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/justinbieber/status/128479978106003456" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "Up early to shoot another video for #UNDERTHEMISTLETOE #Nov1st but something else is out this morning...." Adrianne Palicki Is Ready For A 'Badass' 2012
With roles in 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' and 'Red Dawn,' the 'Friday Night Lights' alum is One to Watch in 2012.

If 2012 teaches us anything about Adrianne Palicki, it may be that she knows her way around a machine gun.
The former "Friday Night Lights" star finds herself pulling the trigger in two high-profile action movies this year, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" and "Red Dawn." Starring alongside big names like Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Chris Hemsworth and fellow Ones to Watch in 2012 honoree Josh Hutcherson in a single year definitely has our attention, but Palicki kicks ass in her own right.
We spoke with Palicki about her big 2012 and the difficulties of finding a date — knowing what she does about hand-to-hand combat.
MTV: First off, I have to congratulate you on being included in MTV's Ones to Watch 2012.
Adrianne Palicki: Thank you very much. It's very cool. I'm very flattered.
MTV: You have such a huge year coming up.
Palicki: Yeah, they keep telling me that. [Laughs.] It's surreal. Part of it is, "Red Dawn" I shot three years ago, so that feels so foreign to know that's actually going to come out this year. "G.I. Joe," we literally got off the plane from New Orleans and the trailer was out. I've never experienced anything like that. I feel like I'm still working right now. When we were shooting, it was less than a year until it came out. We knew that. It was just shocking.
MTV: The fan response to the "G.I. Joe" trailer seemed overwhelmingly positive.
Palicki: It was a pleasant surprise, because this is a reboot. It's scary going into the shoes that have already been worn. We wanted to do something really unique and special. With such an amazing group of talented actors, you don't want it to fall flat. How many people reached out, it's unbelievable to hear the comments that they're so excited, that the trailer is better than the first movie was. Just really cool reactions that you're going, "OK, hopefully we don't let you down." I really don't think we will. I think it's going to be a really fun ride for everybody.
MTV: It had to be a fun movie to shoot, right?
Palicki: Oh my God, it was a blast. Jon Chu, he's this genius. The thing that's so special about him is that he might be the biggest G.I. Joe fan on the planet, so that really came in our favor. He's young and interesting and full of ambition. We really did things that were super exciting and super scary, and I really feel everything's going to come out really, really well.
MTV: What was the scariest thing you had to do on set?
Palicki: We did have to scale a wall, but after seeing "Mission: Impossible 4," I'm like, "Well, I guess it wasn't that scary." An 18-foot wall compared to a skyscraper. The fun thing is that we get to do a lot of our own stunts.
MTV: Were you a fan of "G.I. Joe" when you were growing up?
Palicki: Oh yeah, definitely. I have a big brother, so anything he liked, I liked. He was super big into comic books, so I was super big into comic books. He was super big into G.I. Joe, and I wanted to be Jinx so badly. I don't know just if it was that she was wearing a red costume or what, but I wanted to be a ninja.
MTV: Were you disappointed to be Lady Jaye then?
Palicki: Lady Jaye's a badass. I couldn't really be disappointed with Lady Jaye. She's the one chick in the boys club. She can hold her own. She doesn't get the staff, but she is a weapons specialist. She has that going for her.
MTV: What was it like working with two huge action stars, Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis?
Palicki: Dwayne is like a teddy bear. I know his fans probably don't want to hear that. He might be one of the nicest people on the planet, genuinely. Very caring and very giving. Bruce is a kick in the pants. We get along really well, but he definitely came in during the middle of shooting for a week, added some flavor and left. But he was really fun to work with. I really enjoyed him.
MTV: How comfortable are you with a machine gun now?
Palicki: Between "Red Dawn," "Wonder Woman" and now "G.I. Joe," I feel like I could actually go and really harm some people with my hands. I feel like a Navy SEAL. It's been fun. I mean, I get paid to do this sh--. I get paid to shoot an AK-47 or a .50 cal or punch some dudes in the face or groin or whatever. It's a really fun job.
MTV: What's it like having "Red Dawn" come out after all this time?
Palicki: It's weird, because I'm so very removed from it. It was such a great experience, and I enjoyed it so much. Honestly, there's been some disappointment for me because it's going to be released and then it's not. It's going to be released and then it's not. I'm relieved. I'm really excited it's coming out, and I'm excited to see it myself. I haven't seen it in a year, and I'm sure it's changed quite a bit.
MTV: Back then Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson weren't exactly the huge stars they are today.
Palicki: Oh, Josh Hutcherson. I love him so much. It's crazy. We were babies. It's going to be so funny to see myself in "G.I. Joe" before playing an 18-year-old in "Red Dawn." It's just insane. We're all just babies. Chris was training to go shoot "Thor" when we were shooting that movie. It's crazy. It was so long ago.
MTV: How does it feel having these two action movies coming out in same year?
Palicki: It's very strange, and it's like, "OK, I guess I'll be an action star. Why not?" I will never have a date again, but it's cool, whatever. Men are going to be afraid of me. It's really special, and I'm excited. It's going to be a very busy year for me.
MTV: One of your fellow Ones to Watch is ...
Palicki: Taylor Kitsch. I know that guy! He's awesome. I miss him. He's the nicest guy. He's Canadian, I mean, need I say more? He also has the most ridiculous, disgusting sense of humor than anyone I've met. He's so raunchy, and when it comes out of his mouth, because he's Canadian and because he's so nice, it comes out of nowhere. It just makes it that much funnier.
MTV: Who's going to have the bigger year?
Palicki: Oh God, I can't. I think Taylor's going to have the bigger year. I'm not going to lie. He has a lot coming out this year and all different kinds of movies. I'm really proud of him. He deserves it. He's worked really hard. I'm excited to see where he goes with his career. The thing is, he's not just a pretty face. I mean, he has a very pretty face, by the way, but that's not all he has.

Michael Jackson Doctor Can't Afford Lawyer For Appeal
Conrad Murray asks judge for a court-appointed attorney to appeal his involuntary manslaughter conviction.

<P>Just weeks after being sent to jail for <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">four years</a> following a conviction on a felony involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml" target="_blank">Michael Jackson</a>, cardiologist Conrad Murray is throwing himself on the mercy of the court. The doctor had been slated to earn up to $150,000 a month to act as Jackson's personal physician before the pop icon's death in June 2009 from an overdose of the Murray-administered surgical anesthetic propofol. But on Tuesday <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/conrad_murray_in_shackles_asks/280479" target="_blank"><I>E! News</I></a> reported that Murray filed a <a href="/news/articles/1675343/conrad-murray-conviction-appeal.jhtml">notice of appeal</a> in Los Angeles Superior Court in which he claimed that he is "indigent and respectfully requests the appointment of counsel on appeal." Murray, 58, is planning to appeal both his conviction and his sentence, but has not yet filed papers with the California Appeals Court. He had hired two lawyers to handle his manslaughter case, but is now seeking attorneys with appeal experience. One of those former lawyers, J. Michael Flanagan, told E! that he was shocked at how his client is being treated in jail. "It is crazy and unbelievable how [the sheriffs] are treating" Murray in jail, said Flanagan, who claimed he waited over an hour to see Murray, who was brought out in handcuffs and leg chains. Flanagan was further shocked to see Murray handcuffed to the table for their meeting, something the lawyer said he'd never seen before in the case of a low-level, non-violent offender. Charles Peckham, who is handling civil cases against Murray, told the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/doctor-convicted-in-michael-jacksons-death-seeking-court-paid-attorney-for-appeal/2011/12/13/gIQAHIYGsO_story.html" target="_blank"><I>Associated Press</I></a> that his client is under tight security and isolation that is more intense than other inmates at the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail. "Treating him like Hannibal Lecter is offensive," said Peckham. "This man who saved lives made a mistake, and they're going to [make] him pay like a mass-murderer." Sheriff's officials defended the tight security, saying it was for Murray's safety.</p>
