Moraxella Catarrhalis Lipooligosaccharide Based Conjugate Vaccines for the Prevention of Otitis Media and Respiratory Infections

Moraxella catarrhalis is one of the three leading causative agents of otitis media in children. This is due in part to the current immunizations of children with Streptococcus pneumoniae polysaccharide and conjugate vaccines to prevent otitis media. The proportion of otitis media caused by pneumococcal strains covered by the vaccines have decreased while those caused by Moraxella catarrhalis and nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae have significantly increased. At some point during early childhood, otitis media affects more than 80% of children under 6 years of age. Otitis media can lead to deafness and language or learning deficits. In adults, Moraxella catarrhalis is a major cause of bronchopneumonia and exacerbation of existing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for chronic heavy smokers or elderly patients with chronic pulmonary disease. Moraxella catarrhalis infections can be treated with antimicrobial agents; however, the emergence of antibiotic resistance makes vaccines against Moraxella catarrhalis an attractive alternative to antimicrobial drugs. There are currently no Moraxella catarrhalis vaccines on the market.

The subject technologies are conjugate vaccines against Moraxella catarrhalis. The vaccines are comprised of isolated lipooligosaccharides (LOS) from which esterified fatty acids have been removed to produce detoxified LOS or from which lipid A has been removed to produced a detoxified oligosaccharide (OS) covalently linked to an immunogenic carrier such as tetanus toxoid, and adjuvants such as alum. The vaccines can potentially be used as a vaccine component in a combination vaccine containing other pediatric vaccine components. Survivor Philippines Episode 8 Recap

Time again for our weekly recap of Survivor Philippines. Episode 8 begins on Night 19 as the Dangayne Tribe returns from a brutal Tribal Council. Veteran player Jonathan Penner escaped becoming the first member of The Jury thanks to him playing his hidden immunity idol. Instead, his sole ally, RC, got the boot. Jonathan asks around for an explanation for the betrayals. Jeff Ghent offers a lame answer while Denise tells him flat out that she was just protecting her own butt. Nuevo Informe Destaca el Impacto que Han Tenido los Programas y las Políticas del Presidente Obama en la Comunidad Hispana

Ayer tuve el gusto de participar en una conversación sobre política gubernamental llevada a cabo en el instituto Center for American Progress centrada en asegurar que las vías a la oportunidad se mantengan abiertas para la comunidad Latina. Para coincidir con ese evento publicamos un informe, “Una América Construida Para Que Perdure: La Agenda del Presidente Obama y la Comunidad Hispana,” el cual se fija en la agenda del President y la diferencia que han marcado las políticas de su gobierno para los hispanos y todo estadounidense a medida que trabajamos para avanzar y sacar al país de la crisis económica más grande desde la Grán Depresión.

La razón que se necesita este informe es simple. Los Latinos van a constituir un 60 por ciento del crecimiento en la población en las decadas que vienen, y por lo tanto serán una proporción cada vez mayor de la fuerza laboral de nuestro país. Si nuestro país va a ser exitoso, necesitamos tener una fuerza laboral sólida y bien preparada, así que el éxito de nuestro país está ligado directamente al éxito de la comunidad hispana. Eso es algo que el President Obama reconoce, y es la razón que lo ha hecho una prioridad que su gobierno refleje la grán diversidad de nuestro país y que además seamos un gobierno transparente y que atienda a las necesidades de todo estadounidense.

Así que este informe repasa lo que ha resultado de los programas y las políticas de este gobierno en la comunidad hispano-americana durante los últimos tres años y medio. El informe destaca lo siguiente:

• Que las políticas en la Ley Para la Recuperación, incluyendo recortes tributarios para familias trabajadoras y mejoramientos en el sistema de seguro de desempleo, se combinaron para mantener a 2 millones de hispanos por encima de los niveles de la pobreza en el año 2010.
• Que el acuerdo por el que luchó el Presidente para extender medidas claves como el crédito tributario sobre ingresos (Earned Income Tax Credit o EITC) y el crédito tributario por hijos (Child Tax Credit o CTC) benefició directamente a unos 3,7 millones de familias hispanas incluyendo a 8 millones de niños hispanos.
• Que la reducción de impuestos de nómina por la que luchó el Presidente aseguró que no aumentaran los impuestos para casi 25 millones de trabajadores hispanos.
• Que desde el comienzo del gobierno hasta el 31 de marzo, 2012, más de 3,800 millones en más de 10,800 préstamos de la Administración de Pequeñas Empresas fueron otorgados a pequeñas empresas que pertenecen a hispanos, y lo que incluye más de $128 milliones otorgados a través de préstamos para el comercio internacional.
• El informe también resalta el trabajo que está llevando a cabo la Oficina de Protección al Consumidor (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau o CFPB) a favor de los consumidores hispanos, sea frenando abusos de compañías de tarjeta de crédito, protegiendo a consumidores que usan servicios de remesas, o quienes usan servicios de anticipo de nómina.
• Debido a que la educación es un tema tan importante para esta comunidad, el informe también tiene una sección extensa sobre lo que se está haciendo para mejorar la educación desde la infancia hasta la carrera, y cómo afecta esta comunidad en la que solo un 56 por ciento de estudiantes latinos se gradúan del bachillerato a tiempo.
• Conforme a ese tema, el informe destaca que más de 150,000 estudiantes hispanos se podrán beneficiar de los aumentos en las becas Pell para asistir a la universidad. El gobierno del Presidente Obama ha aumentado la subvención máxima bajo la beca Pell y ha dedicado recursos para que se puedan otorgar tres millones más de becas, un aumento de un 50 por ciento en estudiantes que en el año 2008.
• El informe también detalla el trabajo del gobierno hacia lograr una reforma migratoria, y los mejoramientos que se han hecho tanto en la seguridad fronteriza como en la aplicación de las leyes migratorias, y además en agilizar y mejorar el proceso de inmigración legal.
• Los derechos civiles también han sido una prioridad para este gobierno. Por lo tanto este informe revisa lo que el Departamento de Justicia y divisiones de derechos civiles en agencias alrededor del gobierno han hecho por hacer cumplir las leyes de derechos civiles de nuestro país, y lo que eso significa para la comunidad hispana. Desde proteger a las víctimas del crimen y el abuso, a protecciones para trabajadores agrícolas, a hacer cumplir leyes contra los crímenes de odio, y la protección de inmigrantes y trabajadores temporales contra la trata humana.
• Y ya que más de 210,000 soldados hispanos están prestando servicio en las fuerzas armadas de los Estados Unidos y tenemos más de 1.1 millones de veteranos hispanos, el informe revisa lo que el gobierno está haciendo para ayudar a asegurar que la universidad sea más accesible para los veteranos, para que tengan más acceso a créditos tributarios, para ayudar a más veteranos a comenzar negocios, y para aumentar el acceso a servicios intensivos de búsqueda de trabajo.

So Who Were Those 14 People Standing Behind the President?

On Friday, President Obama laid out his strategy for moving our country forward and reducing our deficit in a balanced way.

Speaking from the East Room of the White House, the President was joined by Vice President Joe Biden – and 14 others stood behind him at the podium.

So who were those 14 people anyway? One was Pam, a school administrator. Another, Sara, is a veteran recovering from open-heart surgery. Barry has six children and Steve is an orthopedic assistant. Estela recently became an American citizen and voted in a U.S. election for the first time on Tuesday.

What they all have in common, however, is an interest in helping find answers to some of the big questions we face as a nation. Whether it’s how to create jobs or how to help responsible homeowners or how to balance investments in our future with cutting our deficit, all of these citizens want to participate in the process of getting things done here in Washington.

Each of them had already taken the first step by speaking out about an issue that mattered to them, responding to requests for input on whitehouse.gov.  

Now, with lawmakers facing a series of deadlines that require major decisions about how to pay our deficit down, we put together an afternoon at the White House that would bring these same folks into the conversation about how those decisions will affect the middle class -- people like them. They would get the chance to stand behind the President during his remarks, and then take part in a discussion with Jason Furman, Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and the Principal Deputy Director of the National Economic Council.
