<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lovato__demi/artist.jhtml">Demi Lovato</a> is having a blast as one of the four judges on <a href="/news/articles/1685141/demi-lovato-x-factor.jhtml">"The X Factor."</a> Nestled alongside <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>, Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid, the onetime Disney princess has found her voice as a singing-competition referee. And she describes her judging style as tough but loving."Well, you know, I try to be positive as much as I can," she explained to MTV News on Sunday, just before she jetted to Miami for the show's boot camp. "But sometimes you've just got to tell people that singing is not for them. When I hear a good singer, sometimes I critique them so that they can be better. And it's not that they're bad."<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Demi Lovato Explains Why She Comes Off As The 'Toughest' 'X Factor' Judge" id="vid:818024" width="415" height="255"></div>In fact, Lovato sometimes will go to bat for a singer despite what the other judges have to say. "But then when I hear someone that I absolutely love or someone that I believe in, I'll stick up for them, even if everyone else votes no," she said. "I'm really honest on the show and sometimes I come off as the toughest judge. I guess you can say I speak my mind."So, which of those other judges does she agree with most at the end of the day? "It's unpredictable. Like sometimes I cannot see what Simon sees in the people he puts through. And same with Britney," she explained. "I'm like, 'Britney, what are you thinking?' But there are more times I relate with Britney [better] than Simon, actually. Maybe because we're the two girls on the show."While her focus on set is to judge the show, when asked if she and Britney have talked about making any music together, she said, "It would be an honor, but no plans yet."Lovato, who in addition to judging the show is also on her <a href="/news/articles/1688267/demi-lovato-holmdel-nj-show.jhtml">summer tour</a>, added that she has no regrets about signing on. "Everyone's amazing," she said. 'Glee'-Cap: Michael Jackson Invades McKinley High

King of Pop's takeover leads to some head-scratching song choices.

"Glee" paid tribute to Michael Jackson during Tuesday night's episode and, shockingly, kept the story moving along in the midst of several MJ-inspired musical numbers. Kurt, Rachel and Quinn all received great news about college, Rachel finally accepted Finn's proposal and evil Sebastian's plot to harm Kurt with a doctored slushee backfired when Blaine took the hit for his boyfriend.<div class="player-placeholder right" title="'Glee'-Cap: Michael Jackson Takes Over McKinley High" id="vid:730282.id:1671179" width="240" height="211"></div>Yet the forced "all Michael, all the time" song selection led to some head-scratching scenes including Kurt, Rachel and Finn serenading an injured Blaine with Jackson's love song to a rat, "Ben," and two different music-video re-enactments only appealed to Jackson superfans. "I'm bewildered," <a href="/music/artist/plant_robert/artist.jhtml">Robert Plant</a> said onstage as he accepted the <MTVNLINK type="news" id="1604580">Grammy Album of the Year award</MTVNLINK> with <a href="/music/artist/krauss_alison/artist.jhtml">Alison Krauss</a> on Sunday night. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday."He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because Raising Sand, which won five trophies at Sunday night's show, is in many ways the perfect <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys/">Grammy</a> album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker's dozen of time-tested standards.<div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:338316" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D338316" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div>You're probably familiar with Robert Plant from his <a href="/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a> days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett's work on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don't know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she's won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history.Really, she's the key to Sand's success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music — so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, Sand was released.And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album's finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she's getting bluesy on Little Milton's "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" or entwining with Plant's husky voice on songs like "Please Read the Letter" and Roly Salley's winsome "Killing the Blues," she more than carries her end of the bargain.And perhaps that's also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on Sand. His arrangements are sparse — giving the two voices ample room to breathe — yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It's a testament to his work that he's often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project ... and it's certainly justified.To date, Sand has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year — "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.One expert was surprised not by the album's success, but by the fact that it's actually quite a good album."At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. ... Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn't have to be any good, you know?" New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. "Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really good record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards."

When Ton Do-Nguyen uploaded his shot-for-shot <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/07/18/beyonce-fan-video-countdown-snuggie">recreation of Beyoncé's "Countdown" video</a> to the Web, he didn't expect it to be seen by anyone other than his friends and family. But with more than 500,000 views on YouTube and the stamp of approval from the Queen B herself, the junior class president from Pennsylvania has quickly learned the power of the Internet."I'm going on her website, and I just start screaming," Ton said about reading a post in which <a href="http://www.beyonce.com/news/brilliant" target="_blank">Beyoncé praises his "Snuggie Version,"</a> calling it "brilliant."<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Ton Do-Nguyen Made His Beyonce Parody For 'Fun'" id="vid:816890" width="415" height="255"></div>"That was literally the best moment of my life — hands down," the 16-year-old told MTV News. "I was scared she would get mad. ... When she posted it on her wall and everything, it was so positive."It's not just the superstar singing Ton's praises either: Everyone from <a href="https://twitter.com/PerezHilton/status/225726296385277952" target="_blank">Perez Hilton</a> to "Glee" star <a href="https://twitter.com/iharryshum/status/225651447864360960" target="_blank">Harry Shum Jr.</a> are bowing down to the Snuggie-clad tribute, with the same question on everybody's mind: How the heck did he do it?"For each specific part, I would just look on YouTube and try and get it down to a T in front of my mirror and go off and film it," Ton explained. Beyonce Cast As Queen Tara In 3-D Animated Film 'Epic'

For a while now, folks have been referring to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a> as a queen ... but now, she's going to make it official. On the big screen.According to <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2012/05/beyonce-colin-farrell-josh-hutcherson-amanda-seyfried-steven-tyler-lead-voice-cast-for-fox-animated-film-epic/" target="_blank">Deadline.com</a>, Beyoncé has been cast as Queen Tara in the upcoming 3-D, CGI-animated film "Epic," a 20th Century Fox film from the makers of the hits "Ice Age" and "Rio."The film reportedly tells the tale of a teenage girl transported to a secret universe, where she finds herself dropped square in the middle of a battle between the forces of good and evil. She joins forces with "a rag-tag team of fun and whimsical characters" to save the world. "Epic" is slated to hit theaters on May 24, 2013.It's the first confirmed role for Beyoncé since she took time off for maternity leave, though she's also slated to star in the Clint Eastwood-directed remake of "A Star Is Born."Starring alongside Bey in the movie are the likes of Colin Farrell, Amanda Seyfried, Aziz Ansari and a pair of her fellow musicians, Pitbull and Aerosmith frontman/"American Idol" judge Steven Tyler. Johnny Knoxville, Jason Sudeikis and Judah Friedlander round out the cast.Josh Hutcherson is also set to appear alongside Beyoncé in the film. When "The X Factor" producers announced that they were adding Britney Spears to the judges' panel, experts and viewers wondered whether she would have what it takes to sit alongside Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid to dole out advice to bright-eyed singers. But from the sounds of audio leaked to <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2012/05/24/britney-spears-x-factor-demi-lovato/">TMZ</a> from the first round of auditions, it seems that the audience thinks Spears will do just fine.After months of speculation, <a href="/news/articles/1684813/britney-spears-x-factor-judge.jhtml">Spears was officially added to the "X Factor"</a> judges' panel in May for a cool $15 million per season. While the show doesn't premiere until September, audio leaked Thursday (May 24) from auditions in Austin, Texas, give us a taste of what we'll be in for come fall. In the clip, Spears and fellow newbie Demi Lovato give differing critiques to a young male contestant."I think that you have a great voice and your tone was great," 19-year-old Lovato told the contestant. Usher's Stepson Kile Glover Laid To Rest In Atlanta

Family and friends gathered at the Wieuca Road Baptist Church for 11-year-old's funeral service Friday (July 27).

Family and friends gathered privately in Atlanta on Friday (July 27) to lay to rest young Kile Glover, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher Raymond</a>'s 11-year old stepson, who died from injuries suffered in a tragic <a href="/news/articles/1689206/ushers-stepson-declared-brain-dead-after-jet-ski-accident.jhtml">Jet Ski accident</a> earlier this month.Glover was the son of Usher's ex-wife, Tameka Foster, and Atlanta TV executive Ryan Glover. He was struck by a Jet Ski while floating in an inner tube on Atlanta's Lake Lanier on July 6.There was no fanfare outside the Wieuca Road Baptist Church on Peachtree Road where the funeral was held, but inside, the Glover, Foster and Raymond families received tremendous amounts of support from many esteemed members of Atlanta's music and political communities. Ludacris, Jazze Pha and Phaedra Parks from "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" were just some of the celebrities in attendance. The hour-long service began at 11 a.m.<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Usher's Stepson Kile Glover Is Laid To Rest" id="vid:819972" width="415" height="255"></div>Young Kile was airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, where doctors subsequently pronounced him brain-dead. "We know God's in control, and are leaning on our faith in Him and His word at this most difficult time," the family told CNN in a statement. "We firmly believe in the power of prayer and ask that you all continue to pray and lift Kile up, as it's the best way we can all support him now."Glover passed away on July 21 after being removed from <a href="/news/articles/1690157/usher-stepson-kile-glover-taken-off-life-support.jhtml">life support</a>.Atlanta radio personality and Cash Money record artist DJ Greg Street sent out a tweet immediately after hearing the news of Glover's death, expressing his support for the family. "Lil RG is an Angel now, Ryan, Tameka, Usher & the whole Glover Family we gotta make him proud," he wrote.The man driving the Jet Ski has been identified as 38-year-old Jeffrey S. Hubbard, a friend of the family. Police have determined that no drugs were involved in the accident, and Hubbard has not been charged with a crime. Usher Brings 2012 BET Awards To A 'Climax'

R&B crooner let his vocals do the dancing with a simple, stripped-down performance.

With two spotlights shining down on him, a sleeveless <a href="/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> belted out the first notes of his summer hit, "Climax," at Sunday's <a href="http://www.bet.com/shows/bet-awards/2012.html" target="_blank">2012 BET Awards</a>.The R&B crooner stood center stage, wearing all black, save for a pair of hot-colored shoes, and sang the ballad with the electro-beat from his seventh studio album, Looking 4 Myself, in front of a live band. Some wicked, black-and-white animation danced behind him on a large screen that backlit the auditorium.This was the first time Usher has performed at the awards show since 2010, where he also sang another ballad, "There Goes My Baby," from his Raymond v. The dance-friendly album was just released last month. "Climax" hit #17 on the singles chart, while second track "Scream" has peaked at #13.For his BET Awards performance, the multiplatinum, multi-Grammy-winning R&B singer kept it fairly muted. Save for a few quick microphone movements, he let his vocals dance during the performance. Britney Spears 'X Factor' Rumors Are 'Nonsense,' Simon Cowell Says

'She's got her confidence up. Once people give her a chance, I think people are really going to get her,' Cowell says of new judge.

Simon Cowell is clearly feeling better — after missing <a href="/news/articles/1687133/x-factor-judges-performances-fighting.jhtml">"The X Factor" auditions in Kansas City, Missouri,</a> due to a bout of bronchitis — and he's talking <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>.Cameramen from <a href="http://www.x17online.com/celebrities/simon_cowell/simon_cowell_says_britney_spears_not_unstable_claims_he_is_video_061412.php" target="_blank">X17</a> caught up with Cowell while he was riding in his town car in Beverly Hills, and they found the oft-testy reality-show judge and music executive to be in a particularly good mood. Cowell addressed a variety of tabloid rumors regarding Spears — namely that she's had some issues on set and that she's shaping up to be one of the tougher judges.<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Britney Spears Explains Why She Wanted To Be A Part Of 'X Factor'" id="vid:769620" width="415" height="255"></div>When a cameraman asked whether "Britney's too unstable" to judge "X Factor," Cowell responded, "No, she's not unstable. I'm the one who's unstable! She's working out great. All these reports that we've fallen out are nonsense. She's doing a great job."Cowell's car then pulls away, but again comes to a stop in traffic, allowing the paparazzi to continue his questioning. Asked whether Spears was his favorite judge, Cowell said, "There's only two girls," referring to Demi Lovato, and went on to jokingly admit that he is his own favorite of all time. "Yeah, I'd say Simon Cowell is a great guy," he quipped. "Very good looking."Pressed further about Spears, Cowell offered more praise for the pop singer. "Like I said, she's been amazing. She's really taking time to learn how to do this," he continued. "She's got her confidence up. Once people give her a chance, I think people are really going to get her. It will be a big surprise. She's a tough judge."As tough as the famously direct Cowell? Britney Spears Has Tearful Reunion With Former Duet Partner On 'X Factor'

Months before the revamped <a href="/news/articles/1687014/britney-spears-demi-lovato-x-factor-auditions.jhtml">"X Factor"</a>  hits the air, we've already come to expect some serious drama from new judge <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>. But in one of those only-in-reality-TV moments, Spears shed some genuine tears on Sunday during audition rounds in San Francisco when she was confronted with a voice and face from her distant past.<a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20604974,00.html" target="_blank">People</a> magazine reported that Spears got emotional when a male contestant hit the stage at Oracle Arena, telling fellow panelists Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid and fellow newbie Demi Lovato, "I know him ... We did a duet together 10 years ago." A source told the magazine that when the man stepped on the stage, "You could see that Britney recognized him straight away ... She got this huge smile on her face and her eyes lit up. It was so sweet."<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Britney Spears Explains Why She Wanted To Be A Part Of 'X Factor'" id="vid:769620" width="415" height="255"></div>While People did not reveal the man's identity, Spears superfan Jordan Miller of fan site <a href="http://www.breatheheavy.com/2012/06/don-philip-drama-at-the-x-factor/" target="_blank">Breathe Heavy</a> confirmed that the auditioner was none other than Don Philip. The one-time aspiring new pop revolution singer performed a duet with Britney on the treacly ballad "I Will Still Love You," from her 1999 debut album, ...Baby One More Time.A spokesperson for the show declined to comment on the singer's identity when asked for comment.The blast from her past got more emotional when Phillip revealed to the judges and audience, "I'm gay." He continued, "At the time I didn't think I was worth ... I didn't think you thought it was OK that I am gay." Spears was reportedly quick to voice her support for Phillip, saying, "I think it is fine you are gay."The unnamed source told People that when Phillip started crying and said, "he thought he'd never see her again and that he'd had a lot to deal with, Britney was comforting him to calm him." Though she was compassionate and warm with Phillip, the source said that the singer was clearly a bit shaken by the unexpected run-in."She's been through a lot in those 10 years, too, so it must have been a shock for her to see him," the source said. "You could tell she was emotional and she really felt for him especially when he was crying, but she also stayed calm." Even with the drama, Spears reportedly gave a very straightforward critique, though it is unknown if Phillip made the cut.Philip, a Miami, Florida, native who tried to ride the same late-'90s teen pop wave that made superstars out of Spears, Christina Aguilera, 'NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys, has spent the time since the duet grinding away at a music career that never reached the heights of his former singing partner. The one-time Jive Records star-in-the-making has sung back-up for Gloria Estefan and toured with Spears early in her career, and like "The Voice" singer <a href="/news/articles/1684782/the-voice-christina-aguilera-tony-lucca.jhtml">Tony Lucca</a>  and Aguilera, maybe he was hoping that a reunion with his former pop pal would provide the boost he's been looking for.Apparently, though, the "Factor" audition didn't go as Philip planned. According to a series of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/donphilip" target="_blank">Facebook</a> posts, Don was disappointed with how things went and wrote, "Tonight i might have sealed my music career fate according to a certain music mogul. I tryed to just be real and instead it totally got turned around on me," he said. "Perhaps this was not the place for me to reveal my very soul and obstacles of my past. Certainly not the place for a reunion ... I promise I only had good intentions in mind."He said his voice "froze" when he began to sing and was never able to recover from what he felt was a "really hardcore interrogation" from what he anonymously described as "two pompous arrogant men."He continued, "I guess I am not as tough skinned as I thought ... Wait it gets worse ... when I looked into the very eyes of my old label mate and saw she too was sad. I knew the whole situation was spinning out of control.. my heart broke."On Monday, Philip posted another note, wondering if Cowell might give him another shot, explaining that he was "so exhausted and could not sleep [the] night before," because he was so scared to face Spears.
